Morehead City

Welcome to the most populous and diverse city on the Crystal Coast! Morehead City, NC was founded in the late 1850’s by former North Carolina Governor John Motley Morehead. Near the turn of the century, the Morehead City population had expanded in a rather unique way. Whaling residents of nearby Diamond City on Shackelford Banks were displaced by inclement weather and a dwindling whaling market. They responded by moving their homes via boats. One place they chose was near present day downtown Morehead City between South 1st and 15th Streets. The new visitors were so enamored with this location that they dubbed it the “Promised Land.” That name stuck and is with us to this day.

Present day Morehead City offers a wide range of activities and cultural attractions. Just about any time of the year, you may find a spot on one of our many charter fishing boats. Our minor league baseball team, the Morehead City Marlins, hits the field from May until August. In September, anticipation builds for the Crystal Coast Super Boat Grand Prix. Boats swiftly race through Bogue Sound at speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour.  The first weekend of October ushers in the Morehead City Seafood Festival, recipient of the Top 20 Event/Festival of the Year by the Southeast Tourism Society. This stellar event is tough to beat with its free admission, a multitude of rides and games for children, gourmet food and live music – all situated within the already picturesque setting of the downtown Morehead City waterfront. Also, our beloved Crystal Coast Jamboree delivers live music Nashville and Myrtle Beach style. At The History Place on Arendell Street, you’ll learn through visual presentations all about our history dating from indigenous Indians through World War II.

If you’re looking for the freshest seafood, look no further. Keeping to its roots, Morehead City prides itself on being able to offer fresh, local caught seafood at affordable prices. Many restaurants are situated right on the waterfront or have a great view of Sugar Loaf island. Morehead City is located on the other side of the bridge from Atlantic Beach so Contact Us today and let us help you create the perfect beach vacation!
